{"id":131224,"date":"2016-07-24T11:22:03","date_gmt":"2016-07-24T09:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=131224"},"modified":"2016-07-24T11:28:58","modified_gmt":"2016-07-24T09:28:58","slug":"anc-election-campaign-hits-r1-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/131224\/anc-election-campaign-hits-r1-billion\/","title":{"rendered":"ANC election campaign spend hits R1 billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The African National Congress (ANC) has spent more than R1 billion on campaigning for the municipal elections according to EWN, citing the party\u2019s head of campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>This is more than double the R429 million the party spent on its campaign for the general elections in 2014, EWN <a href=\"http:\/\/ewn.co.za\/2016\/07\/21\/ANC-spends-a-hefty-R1-bln-on-election-campaign\" target=\"_blank\">said in a report <\/a>this week.<\/p>\n<p>The ANC has admitted that the local government elections are going to be one of the toughest for the party, amid waning support and increasing competition from rivals, the DA, and the EFF.<\/p>\n<p>Nomvula Mokonyane said that cost include holding rallies, paying volunteers, buying t-shirts and preparing candidate lists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe national tally so far, we have spent over R1 billion. Remember we do posters for candidates, we do billboards, we have trucks and money and food for volunteers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Political analyst Somadoda Fikeni underlined how expensive a political campaign can be. &#8220;Just organising one mass rally, you could be spending in the region of R20 million to 25 million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Research and analysis from financial services company, Nomura offers a prediction for the outcome of the 2016 municipal elections.<\/p>\n<p>Nomura <a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/general\/130678\/anc-could-lose-two-major-metros-in-the-2016-elections-research\/\" target=\"_blank\">forecasts<\/a> that the ANC will win 56.5% of the overall vote in the municipal elections on 3 August 2016\u00a0 &#8211; giving a range of 56.0% \u2013 59.5%.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling party will maintain strong support in rural areas (around 70%) while urban areas will drop to 50%.
