{"id":131978,"date":"2016-07-30T19:15:45","date_gmt":"2016-07-30T17:15:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=131978"},"modified":"2016-07-29T17:14:51","modified_gmt":"2016-07-29T15:14:51","slug":"weird-and-wonderful-new-home-trends-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/131978\/weird-and-wonderful-new-home-trends-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Weird and wonderful new home trends in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The concepts of style and luxury are very subjective, and the quest to create the epitome of each has resulted in some fairly odd design ideas over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The South African market is far from exempt from these eccentricities, with local luxury homeowners often taking their cues from international trendsetters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Snoring Rooms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing worse than a snoring partner when you\u2019re desperate for sleep, and many a spouse will admit to fleeing to a spare room when the rumbles prove too much to handle.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, spouses at the head of elite and noble families in England always kept separate bedchambers, a practice that has recently inspired the introduction of a \u201csnoring room\u201d to many luxury architects\u2019 client briefs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA snoring room isn\u2019t quite as extreme as a completely separate bedroom,\u201d said Tony Clarke, MD of the Rawson Property Group. \u201cIt\u2019s more of an antechamber off the main bedroom, furnished with a separate bed, where one can slip away for a bit of peace and quiet when necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Clarke, snoring rooms are typically modest in size, and feature plenty of soft furnishings to dampen sound and provide a good night\u2019s rest.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/snoring-e1469798526811.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-131986\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/snoring-e1469798526811.jpg\" alt=\"snoring\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Larders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With whole foods and organic produce becoming de rigueur in high society, a mere side-by-side refrigerator is no longer adequate storage for all that healthy goodness.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, the wealthy English elite are adding traditional larders to their kitchens, using the naturally cool English climate and shade-facing orientation to keep the rooms chilled and their contents fresher for longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA naturally chilled larder is more difficult to achieve here in South Africa, with our considerably warmer summers,\u201d said Clarke, \u201cbut we are definitely seeing more emphasis put on generous food storage areas in kitchens. There are already some luxury homes with air-conditioned cold-rooms, and I would not be surprised to see this trend becoming more popular.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Pantry-e1469799217784.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-131988\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Pantry-e1469799217784.jpg\" alt=\"Pantry\" width=\"600\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Orangeries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Conservatories are a quintessentially British architectural element, designed to make the most of every ray of English sun. Modern Brits, however, are taking a more stylish approach to the typical conservatory design, using intricate metal frames to create light and airy orangeries for that indoor-outdoor feel.<\/p>\n<p>Here in SA, sun-drenched conservatories are an invitation for heatstroke, but according to Tony Clarke, that doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019re not embracing the glass house in our own, African way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlurring the divide between indoor and outdoor spaces is a very big movement in modern luxury architecture,\u201d he said, \u201cand having rooms made entirely of glass is a popular way to achieve this.
