{"id":132066,"date":"2016-07-31T09:21:44","date_gmt":"2016-07-31T07:21:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=132066"},"modified":"2016-07-31T09:23:51","modified_gmt":"2016-07-31T07:23:51","slug":"da-and-eff-in-secret-coalition-talks-report-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/132066\/da-and-eff-in-secret-coalition-talks-report-2\/","title":{"rendered":"DA and EFF in secret coalition talks: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A report in the Sunday Times claims that political parties are already holding secret meetings to form coalitions in key metros, ahead of the elections on Wednesday, 3 August.<\/p>\n<p>The final poll ahead of the elections, published by eNCA and Ipsos this week, has the Democratic Alliance winning the most hotly contested metros in the country &#8211; Nelson Mandela Bay and Tshwane, with Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/131844\/final-poll-ahead-of-the-elections-shows-da-winning-three-major-metros\/\" target=\"_blank\">Final poll ahead of the elections shows DA winning three major metros<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However <a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/130680\/why-a-big-loss-of-power-for-the-anc-could-be-bad-news-for-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\">analysts<\/a> have said that the figures in the poll largely overestimates the DA&#8217;s power, with the ANC likely to keep control of at least two, if not all three metros come voting day.<\/p>\n<p>This may force the likes of the EFF and DA to form councils in metros where the ANC is likely to retain power.<\/p>\n<p>The Sunday Times reported that leaders of the opposition parties, including the DA, EFF, UDM, IFP and the United Front, among others, have been in talks &#8216;to gang up on the ANC in metros where the party could drop below 50%&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe this week also opened the door to potential talks &#8220;if negotiations for coalitions prove necessary&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Coalitions are a consequence of results, not an aim of campaigns,&#8221; said Mantashe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The local, provincial and national leadership will be involved if negotiations for coalitions prove necessary.
