{"id":132167,"date":"2016-08-01T17:57:24","date_gmt":"2016-08-01T15:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=132167"},"modified":"2016-08-01T19:14:47","modified_gmt":"2016-08-01T17:14:47","slug":"sa-worker-fined-r40000-for-submitting-false-overtime-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/132167\/sa-worker-fined-r40000-for-submitting-false-overtime-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"SA worker fined R40,000 for submitting false overtime claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">A municipal worker in Pietermaritzburg was sentenced to five years\u2019 imprisonment or a R40,000 fine after he was found guilty of submitting false overtime claims over two years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><i>The Witness<\/i> reported that the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sentenced <\/span>Reeaz Paruk for fraud, forgery <span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">and uttering.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Paruk was also ordered to pay back the overtime claimed, amounting to R385,102.94 &#8211;\u00a0 which will be deducted from the payout of his pension.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><i>The Witness<\/i><\/span> reported that Paruk, a foreman at the municipality\u2019s electricity department, was arrested by the Hawks in May following an internal audit by the Msunduzi Municipality.<\/p>\n<p>He was sentenced this week to a R40,000 fine or five years\u2019 imprisonment and an additional five years wholly suspended for five years.<\/p>\n<p>Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Nqobile Madonda welcomed the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil welcomes the verdict of the accused. This should be a lesson and serve as a deterrent to all other employees that engage in illegal activities.
