Analysis leading up to local elections shows that major parties will be battling it out for the &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bdlive.co.za\/national\/2016\/08\/02\/news-analysis-polls-will-be-a-battle-for-sas-crown-jewels\">crown jewels<\/a><\/strong>&#8221; of the country &#8211; major metros like Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Nelson Mandela Bay, where the race is tight, and an ANC loss would carry future political significance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enca.com\/south-africa\/da-asks-concourt-to-throw-out-appeal-in-spy-tapes-case\">The Nation Prosecuting Authority seeking a &#8220;speedy conclusion&#8221; to the president Zuma corruption case is a joke, the DA says<\/a><\/strong>, as it is the NPA which has used every opportunity to delay the case&#8217;s progression &#8211; namely for Zuma to have his day in court. The DA has asked the Constitutional Court to dismiss the NPA&#8217;s application to appeal a ruling that said Zuma should face over 780 charges of corruption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>South Africa&#8217;s rand retreated on Monday, surrendering recent\u00a0gains as some investors cashed in profits from the previous\u00a0week&#8217;s rally to nine months highs. Stocks were higher,\u00a0buoyed mostly by financials shares. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xe.com\/currencycharts\/?from=USD&amp;to=ZAR\">On Tuesday the rand was trading at R13.93 to the dollar, R18.37\u00a0to the pound and R15.57 to the euro<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In global news:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/southAfricaNews\/idAFL8N1AI3N0\">Asian shares slipped on Tuesday, taking their cues from a\u00a0modestly lower day on Wall Street<\/a><\/strong>, while crude oil prices\u00a0stabilised after their overnight tumble and the U.S. dollar\u00a0edged higher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/global-oil-idUSL3N1AJ17Y\">Oil prices edged up in early trading on Tuesday after U.S.\u00a0crude broke below $40 per barrel the previous session<\/a><\/strong>, but\u00a0traders said fuel markets continued to be dogged by excess\u00a0production.\u00a0U.S. crude was at $40.16 a barrel, up 10 cents, while\u00a0Brent crude was\u00a0trading at $42.34 per barrel, up 20 cents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In other news:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/business\/news\/at-what-cost-nuclear-2051985\">An in-depth analysis by electricity expert Chris Yelland shows that the cost to build South Africa&#8217;s nuclear energy plans is over R750 billion<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; while the levelised cost of electricity from the plans is around R1.30 per kilowatt hour (kWh).
