{"id":132601,"date":"2016-08-05T11:04:42","date_gmt":"2016-08-05T09:04:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=132601"},"modified":"2016-08-05T11:04:42","modified_gmt":"2016-08-05T09:04:42","slug":"this-is-definitely-an-anti-zuma-vote-habib","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/132601\/this-is-definitely-an-anti-zuma-vote-habib\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;This is definitely an anti-Zuma vote&#8217; &#8211; Habib"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Analysts say that the ANC could face massive internal conflict as the ruling party nears its worst election result since it came to power in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Adam Habib, vice-chancellor of Wits university, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/next.ft.com\/content\/a4d6f4c2-5a03-11e6-9f70-badea1b336d4\" target=\"_blank\">Financial Times<\/a> that the result was a \u201chuge blow\u201d to the ANC. \u201cThis is definitely an anti-Zuma vote,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Habib called the \u201cmodernist\u201d wing of the ANC will have to decide whether to mount a further attempt to oust president Jacob Zuma. If the leadership in Gauteng province did not move against Zuma, he said, the president might well try to move against them, by making them a scapegoat for the poor performance in both cities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEither way you\u2019re going to see a massive conflict within the ANC,\u201d Habib said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see decline pretty much across the board, in all of the metros,\u201d Susan Booysen, a political scientist said. \u201cThe declines were expected, but their severity was not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu has said the ANC\u2019s current standing in the polls, at between 54% and 55%, was a \u201ccause for concern\u201d, and that the party would have to do serious introspection on \u201cwhat went wrong\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With more than 90% of the results out already, Mthembu told News24 on Friday morning at the national elections results centre that the ANC was in new territory with its lower polls.<\/p>\n<p>Mthembu&#8217;s stance also contradicted a media release by ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa on Thursday night, in which he declared that the party was \u201cbuoyant and energised\u201d at its 54.2% of the vote, as the DA was \u201ctrailing behind at a mere 26.9%\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis result affirms the organisation\u2019s confidence that South Africans have once again entrusted the ANC with managing the country\u2019s municipalities,\u201d Kodwa said.<\/p>\n<p>But Mthembu was far less upbeat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What went wrong?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably this is the first election where the ANC will be standing around 54%, 55%,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the elections we had over 60%. The mere fact that you are standing around 54%, 55% is indeed a cause for concern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore the ANC must look itself in the eye because we don\u2019t believe that any of the organisations that are on offer in South Africa have a better solution than the ANC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we do have a better solution, what went wrong? If our policies are the best policies, what went wrong?
