Eskom says it has obtained a court order preventing 15,000 National Union of Mine workers (NUM) members from going on strike over wage disputes.<\/p>\n
NUM announced on Tuesday that thousands of its members would strike on Wednesday after wage talks with Eskom stalled.<\/p>\n
However, the strike has been branded illegal as workers for crucial utilities like Eskom are prohibited by law from going on strike.<\/p>\n
Eskom spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe said the court order is a “re-emphasis of the Labour Relations Act”, adding that operations have not yet been affected.<\/p>\n
According to Reuters, NUM said it was not aware of the court order, and it was not clear whether or not the “full-blown strike” would go ahead or not.<\/p>\n
The threat of labour strikes hit Eskom after a year of no load shedding. Eskom remains in a precarious position, with financial problems and an aging grid.<\/p>\n
