South Africa’s parliament has on Thursday began to interview candidates to replace Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The committee tasked with replacing Madonsela has whittled down the number of candidates to just 14 names.<\/p>\n

The nomination process opened on 3 June and closed on 24 June 2016 \u2013 with the committee receiving a total of 73 nominations and applications, which was short-listed to 59 candidates.<\/p>\n

News24 reported that the interview process got off to a shaky start, after EFF chief whip Floyd Shivambu called for the shortlisting process to be re-opened.<\/p>\n

Armed with a lawyer\u2019s letter questioning why EFF chairperson Dali Mpofu was not shortlisted, Shivambu accused the committee of steamrolling the process.<\/p>\n

He also slammed the committee\u2019s decision to interview all 14 candidates in one day.<\/p>\n

Shivambu was attending the committee for the first time, and said the meetings had occurred during the election campaigning and they could not leave that to attend the meetings.<\/p>\n

“As EFF we object profusely to the manner in which the shortlisting was done. We are going to support any legal action against the process,” he said a few minutes before the interviews started.<\/p>\n

He called for the criteria of shortlisting to be clarified and re-opened, and committee members to start the process again, “fairly”.<\/p>\n

Had they been part of the process, he said, there were other candidates they would have suggested for shortlisting.<\/p>\n

Chairperson Makhosi Khoza said the EFF were holding the process to ransom.<\/p>\n

She said backtracking a few minutes before the interviews started was not the right way to do business.<\/p>\n

Their lawyers would respond to the letter, before overriding Shivambu and starting the interviews, 20 minutes later than scheduled.<\/p>\n

Among the 14 candidates shortlisted are two judges, several lawyers, as well as the current deputy national director of public prosecutions. <\/span><\/p>\n

Candidates were expected to have approximately 40 minutes to sell themselves to the committee during the interview process.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 14 nominated candidates are as follows:<\/p>\n

  9. Adv William Andrew Hofmeyr (deputy director of Public Prosecution<\/em>)<\/li>\n
  10. Adv Nonkosi Princess Cetywayo (Sheriff of Belville High Court<\/em>)<\/li>\n
  11. Bongani Majola<\/li>\n
  12. Kaajal Ramjathan-Keogh (executive director of the Southern Africa Litigation Centr<\/span>e<\/em>)<\/li>\n
