Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa\u00a0has appointed a seven-person panel to advise\u00a0on\u00a0an\u00a0appropriate level at which\u00a0the\u00a0national minimum wage can be set.<\/p>\n
He appointed the panel in his capacity as Chairperson of the Committee of Principals of the National Economic Development Council (Nedlac).<\/p>\n
\u201cThe appointment of the advisors takes place against the background of consensus among\u00a0Nedlac\u00a0social partners to introduce a\u00a0national minimum wage as part of efforts to restore the dignity of\u00a0the majority of\u00a0South Africans;\u00a0address the triple challenge of poverty, underdevelopment\u00a0and inequality, and reduce\u00a0pay differentials while maximising job creation,\u201d the Presidency said.<\/p>\n
The Nedlac\u00a0Committee of Principals comprises representatives of government, labour, business and community\u00a0charged with, among\u00a0others,\u00a0determining the\u00a0national minimum wage.<\/p>\n
During his State of the\u00a0Nation Address in 2014, President Jacob Zuma called on\u00a0Nedlac\u00a0social partners, under the leadership of Deputy President Ramaphosa,\u00a0to address low wages, wage inequalities\u00a0and national minimum wage,\u00a0violent and protracted strikes.<\/p>\n
Deputy President Ramaphosa, in consultation with\u00a0Nedlac\u00a0social partners, appointed the following persons to\u00a0a\u00a0Panel of Advisors to assist\u00a0Nedlac\u00a0in setting the level of\u00a0the national minimum wage,\u00a0taking into account work done thus far by\u00a0Nedlac\u00a0technical\u00a0task-teams:<\/p>\n
