Telkom has been hit by a series of attacks which the company has called \u201cacts of sabotage\u201d, and is offering a R500,000 reward for information on the incidents.<\/p>\n
\u201cA number of Telkom facilities around the country were yesterday targeted in a series of acts of sabotage,\u201d said Telkom.<\/p>\n
\u201cFacilities in Midrand, Pretoria West, Silverton, Durban, Pinetown, Pietermaritzburg, Makhado, and Messina were sabotaged.\u201d<\/p>\n
Telkom said those responsible for the attacks \u201cknew what they were doing\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cCables have been cut to cause maximum damage. Entire street distribution cabinets have been ripped apart and, in a few instances yesterday, set on fire.\u201d<\/p>\n
Specialist equipment was used\u00a0to access fibre cables at certain of the targeted areas, equipment which is not widely available.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe SAPS are currently pursuing a number of good leads to identify these saboteurs,\u201d said Telkom.<\/p>\n
Telkom is offering a\u00a0R500,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the saboteurs.<\/p>\n
Telkom noted that the \u201cacts of sabotage\u201d have taken place while Communication Workers Union (CWU) employees are on strike.<\/p>\n
The striking workers recently blocked access to Telkom offices and facilities, with employees barred from entering their places of work, said Telkom.<\/p>\n
The company subsequently obtained a court interdict to prevent striking workers from negatively influencing Telkom\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe union is demanding an 11% increase for all bargaining unit employees,\u201d said Telkom.<\/p>\n
