EFF councillors will forfeit half their salaries for the first three months of their new jobs to pay off the party’s election debt, the City Press reported – while members have been told to buy vans, not sedans, for campaigning for 2019.<\/p>\n
According to the report, the EFF accrued a lot of debt campaigning for the 2016 local elections, having taken out a loan worth millions from Standard Bank to fund it. This despite claims from the party that it had only spent R1 million on the elections.<\/p>\n
To pay off the debt all 761 councillors – right down to ward level – will give up half their salary for three months. This will help the party recover as much as R24 million, the City Press said.<\/p>\n
According to party insiders, some members were willing to forfeit their entire salary – while others were not happy about being forced to pay at all saying this was a full time job, and it was unreasonable to ask anyone to give up half their pay.<\/p>\n
