Newly elected Mayor Herman Mashaba has pledged to change the lives of those living in the City of Johannesburg for the better.<\/p>\n
Though the Democratic Alliance caucus leader in the City of Joburg asked to postpone his inaugural address in honour of African National Congress councillor Nhlanhla Mthembu who died just before the voting process took place on Monday, he delivered a few words as the city\u2019s first citizen.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnder the DA led administration public funds that have been misused over the past ten years or so will be used to look after our people,\u201d he told guests at the Johannesburg City Hall.<\/p>\n
Mashaba, speaking to a more subdued room, late into the night emphasised the importance of public service, stating that he was pleased power had returned to civil society.<\/p>\n
He also pledged support towards small businesses.<\/p>\n
\u201cSmall business men and women will be my biggest friend, when you are successful you will give employment opportunities to our people and you will pay your taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n
In speaking of employment, which was one of his biggest selling points throughout his 18 months of campaigning for the local government elections, Mashaba said government\u2019s role was support.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur government needs to play a role of not being an employer, but to create a conducive environment for the private sector to employ our people,\u201d said Mashaba.<\/p>\n
He also declared war on corruption, calling it the number one enemy of his city.<\/p>\n
Mashaba will now put together his mayoral committee and prepare for his inaugural speech, which is expected to be delivered on September 13.<\/p>\n
