{"id":13512,"date":"2012-05-24T16:33:07","date_gmt":"2012-05-24T14:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=13512"},"modified":"2012-05-25T10:52:47","modified_gmt":"2012-05-25T08:52:47","slug":"hewlett-packard-layoff-plans-supported-by-analysts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/hardware\/13512\/hewlett-packard-layoff-plans-supported-by-analysts\/","title":{"rendered":"Hewlett Packard layoff plans supported by analysts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Analysts said <a title=\"Hewlett Packard Co\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2007-Hewlett-Packard\">Hewlett Packard Co&#8217;s<\/a> plan to cut jobs was a step in the right direction but the PC maker will have to do more to regain investors&#8217; confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of the world&#8217;s No. 1 personal computer maker were up 6 percent at $22.26 in early trading on the <a title=\"NYSE - New York Stock Exchange\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2178-NYSE-New-York-Stock-Exchange\">New York Stock Exchange<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we certainly don&#8217;t believe HP has resolved all their issues, we do see the company moving in the right direction,&#8221; RBC Capital Markets LLC analyst Amit Daryanani wrote in a note to clients.<\/p>\n<p>The accelerating popularity of mobile computing devices such as Apple Inc&#8217;s iPad has been eroding PC sales for years and a downturn in the European markets has just added to the pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Rival Dell gave a disappointing revenue forecast Earlier this week that spurred fears that global tech spending is weakening faster than anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>HP said the layoff of 27,000 workers, or 8 percent of its workforce, would be made mainly through early retirement and would generate annual savings of $3 billion to $3.5 billion as it exits fiscal year 2014. The company employs more than 300,000 people globally.<\/p>\n<p>Hewlett Packard, which also posted a second-quarter profit above market estimates, said it expects to use the cost savings from job cuts to drive organic growth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The market will likely want to see that the savings are real and tangible in the bottom line before they are diverted to other things,&#8221; Nomura Equity Research analyst Richard Windsor said in a research report.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When one has little faith in a management team, there will be little hope that these savings will ever be properly realized as they will never be properly visible,&#8221; Windsor said.<\/p>\n<p>At least three brokerages raised their price targets on the stock on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts said it may be too early to predict a sustainable turn, given the deterioration of demand in Europe and secular pressures in many of HP&#8217;s businesses into the second half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe many of HPQ&#8217;s further risks stem from inconsistent operational execution and recent large acquisitions, which combined with aggressive buy-backs have weakened its balance sheet,&#8221; said Evercore analyst Rob Cihra.<\/p>\n<p>Rival Dell has been diversifying its revenue base in the face of weakened consumer demand, giving up low-margin sales to consumers and moving into higher-margin areas, such as catering to the technology needs of small and medium businesses in the public sector and the healthcare industry.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts, however, prefer HP over <a title=\"Dell Inc.\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2277-Dell\">Dell<\/a> saying the PC maker&#8217;s revenue and margins growth will take too long to play out, whereas HP&#8217;s restructuring will likely help the stock over the next few quarters, despite weak revenue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Analysts said Hewlett Packard Co&#8217;s plan to cut jobs was a step in the right direction but the PC maker will have to do more to regain investors&#8217; confidence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":1475,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[25,273,1860],"class_list":["post-13512","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-hardware","tag-active","tag-hewlett-packard","tag-layoffs"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/13512","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/7"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=13512"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/13512\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":13577,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/13512\/revisions\/13577"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1475"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=13512"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=13512"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=13512"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
