{"id":135169,"date":"2016-09-01T08:15:11","date_gmt":"2016-09-01T06:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=135169"},"modified":"2016-09-01T08:15:11","modified_gmt":"2016-09-01T06:15:11","slug":"treasury-blocks-eskoms-r855-million-gupta-coal-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/135169\/treasury-blocks-eskoms-r855-million-gupta-coal-contract\/","title":{"rendered":"Treasury blocks Eskom&#8217;s R855 million Gupta coal contract"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>National Treasury has rejected a\u00a0request from Eskom to extend a contract with Gupta-owned Tegeta Exploration\u00a0by a further\u00a0R855 million, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/amabhungane.co.za\/article\/2016-09-01-treasury-blocks-eskoms-tegeta-contract\">amaBhungane reports<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The contract extension is for the same contract that Eskom previously extended by handing Tegeta an advance of R586 million earlier in the year.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom&#8217;s contracts with Tegeta\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0which is majority-owned by the Gupta family as well as their associates and president Jacob Zuma&#8217;s son, Duduzane\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0is currently the subject of an investigation by Treasury.<\/p>\n<p>According to Treasury, Eskom has been frustrating the investigation for the past three months by refusing to submit requested documentation. Eskom handed over the documentation on Tuesday night, after Public Enterprises minister, Lynne Brown, stepped in.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation comes amid reports that the coal being supplied to Eskom from Tegeta is of poor quality, and does not meet the necessary standards for use.
