Granted, hacks and data compromises have been taking place even before the first computer was connected to the internet, but the focus has shifted in recent years.”

Bring your own encryption (BYOE)

To achieve a balance between protection and usability, bring your own encryption (BYOE) is gaining momentum in the Always-On Enterprise and its need for more effective security.

BYOE provides companies with the ability to use their own encryption software and manage their own encryption keys on a cloud service.

As the name suggests, it really is a case of bringing their own encryption to a cloud or service provider platform of their choice.

Veeam has seen a shift towards social engineering and attacking what is perceived to be the weakest point of any IT security system – the user.

“After all, you can have the best systems in the world, but if an employee leaves a password lying around or does not take care of a mobile device linked to highly sensitive corporate data, then there is little to be done,” Schuck explains.

BYOE seeks to change this, as data access is limited to those with encryption keys, the level of user and device authentication is taken to a significantly more defensible level.

This also addresses the concern for organisations wanting to migrate data to a different provider, since even if residual data remains on the previous provider, it would be completely inaccessible without the correct key.

Protecting data backups

Cyber security is also an ongoing concern at the the modern data centre level, given how the data centre has become a very targeted way to cripple an organisation.

While implementing a traffic light system (red, yellow, and green) to identify risks, might be a good initial strategy, it is by no means a silver bullet.

“This especially comes into play when looking at disaster recovery. In theory, making backups and having access to them should indicate a green light,” says Schuck.

“Yet, what controls have the company put in place to govern the person who has access to the backups and who can restore them?”

Organisations need to invest in proper techniques, systems, policies, and even broader forms of availability to keep them more secure.

The organisation needs to ask itself what the expectations are around availability and in which situations it becomes necessary.

Most companies have high demands of the continuity of their data centre, but it is in the way data is restored that becomes the challenge.

“Cyber security is a global issue and one that no organisation, irrespective of size and industry, can afford to ignore.

“Those enterprises who are serious about becoming truly Always-On need to find the best way to protect their data while still finding an effective way of giving relevant employees access to it.

“However, it is not just about protecting systems but also about securing backups to maintain operations in the event of a disaster,” Schuck concludes.

The introduction of the Always-On enterprise requires a balance between data availability demands with effective ICT security policies.

[10459
26,11609
post-136441","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-industry-news","tag-headline","tag-veeam
["GET
