{"id":137195,"date":"2016-09-19T10:32:54","date_gmt":"2016-09-19T08:32:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=137195"},"modified":"2016-09-19T10:33:55","modified_gmt":"2016-09-19T08:33:55","slug":"gauteng-government-given-30-days-to-back-back-r259-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/137195\/gauteng-government-given-30-days-to-back-back-r259-million\/","title":{"rendered":"Gauteng government given 30 days to pay back R259 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gauteng owes the City of Joburg R259 million in unpaid rates and has 30 days to hand over the money, mayor Herman Mashaba revealed on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing an investigation I can reveal that Gauteng government departments owe the City of Joburg R259 million in outstanding rates,\u201d Mashaba said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Mashaba, the Democratic Alliance member who took over the mayoral post after the African National Congress lost the city in the local elections, has hit the ground running.<\/p>\n<p>Last week Mashaba stopped a bicycle lane project worth R70 million as he said the money should first be used to tar roads that are in poor form.<\/p>\n<p>In Monday&#8217;s announcement, he said he would write to Gauteng premier David Makhuru, giving his government 30 days to either pay the R259 million or enter into an acceptable repayment agreement with the City, \u201cas any other defaulting resident is expected to do\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFailure to do so will result in the City taking immediate action \u2013 where possible \u2013 cutting services to defaulting departments,\u201d said Mashaba. \u201cWe urge the defaulting departments to urgently comply within this time frame so that such action will not be necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the departments guilty of failing to meet their rates payments are as follows:The Department of Infrastructure and Development \u2013 R161 million;The Department of Human Settlements \u2013 R39 million; and the Department of Health \u2013 R59 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese provincial government departments, who budget for rates and taxes, have not paid their dues to the city for a long time,\u201d he said. \u201cOne has to ask: what has happened to their budget, which would have been set aside for this purpose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the debt had accumulated over time. \u201cIt is disgraceful that the previous ANC-led administration allowed the ANC-run provincial government to get away with this for so long,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a clear message to give to Premier Makhuru and his government: from today, you will not receive free lunches in the City of Joburg any longer. Pay up or face the consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween April and June this year, money owed by residents to the City grew by R2.8 billion.
