President Jacob Zuma has declared December 27th a public holiday to ensure that workers get 12 public holidays with full pay in 2016.<\/p>\n
The declaration follows a request from unions, pointing out that 2016 holds only 11 public holidays due to Christmas Day falling on a Sunday.<\/p>\n
Typically, when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday becomes a public holiday – but in the case of Christmas Day, this would overlap with the\u00a0Day of Goodwill\u00a0on the 26th.<\/p>\n
Because of this, the following Tuesday – 27 December – is now a public holiday.<\/p>\n
“The declaration of the 27th December as a public holiday will ensure that workers are not unduly disadvantaged because of this unusual event and are still entitled to their 12 paid public holidays,” the presidency said.<\/p>\n
