{"id":137721,"date":"2016-09-23T19:00:17","date_gmt":"2016-09-23T17:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=137721"},"modified":"2016-09-23T17:03:43","modified_gmt":"2016-09-23T15:03:43","slug":"there-is-a-rising-number-of-bogus-travel-expense-claims-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/137721\/there-is-a-rising-number-of-bogus-travel-expense-claims-in-sa\/","title":{"rendered":"There is a rising number of &#8216;bogus&#8217; travel expense claims in SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new survey finds there has been a big jump in the number of bribery and corruption cases in South Africa over the past 24 months.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the ENSafrica\u2019s 2016 survey highlighted a big rise in incidents of bribery and corruption in the country\u201a with 79% of incidents reported locally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe survey results show that 39% of respondents experienced incidents of bribery or corruption in the last 24 months\u201a and highlight a marked increase in bribery and corruption in South Africa in particular\u201a\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ensafrica.com\/Uploads\/Images\/news\/CUsersTJ001DesktopFORENSICSENSafrica-ABCsurveyresults.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">ENSafrica<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>The survey pointed to a big jump in the number of respondents who said their business was exposed to corruption and bribery relating t0 expenses for travel and lodging of foreign government officials (e.g per diem payments).<\/p>\n<p>Per diem payments&#8217; generally refers to a specified amount that employers will pay to employees as reimbursement for various expenses.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Types-of-bribery.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-new-size wp-image-137719\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Types-of-bribery-640x416.png\" alt=\"types-of-bribery\" width=\"640\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Types-of-bribery-640x416.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Types-of-bribery-300x195.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Types-of-bribery-768x499.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Types-of-bribery.png 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>The survey\u2019s key findings relating to perceived bribery and corruption risks included the following<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>27% of respondents said they were highly exposed to bribery in Africa \u2014 up from 17% in 2015 \u2014 while 57% said they were moderately exposed;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>76% said that &#8220;the use of third parties&#8221; posed a significant risk to their company \u2014 up from 68% in 2015 and 65% in 2014;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>52% said they were exposed to the risk of bribes and 48% to the facilitation of payments.
