{"id":138487,"date":"2016-09-29T13:45:38","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T11:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=138487"},"modified":"2016-09-29T13:46:03","modified_gmt":"2016-09-29T11:46:03","slug":"south-african-student-picks-up-50000-google-prize-for-science-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/138487\/south-african-student-picks-up-50000-google-prize-for-science-project\/","title":{"rendered":"South African student wins $50,000 Google prize for science project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kiara Nirghin, a 16\u00a0year-old South African student who goes to St. Martin\u2019s in Johannesburg, has been named the overall winner of the 2016 Google Science Fair.<\/p>\n<p>She was awarded the grand prize\u00a0of $50,000 (R687,470) for her project titled \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.googlesciencefair.com\/projects\/en\/2016\/deb654bce83b15eed364f52fa8685634649014602eca78858c58fec00aa6041a\">Combatting drought with a Low-Cost, biodegradable Superabsorbent Polymer made out of\u00a0orange peels<\/a><\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Google said\u00a0the prize will be given in scholarship funding,\u00a0and is intended\u00a0to further Nirghin\u2019s\u00a0education.<\/p>\n<p>In her online submission to the science fair,\u00a0Nirghin explains that she conducted\u00a0three experiments over 45 days to\u00a0see if she could make a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) out of bio-waste that outperforms existing synthetic SAPs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results of the water retention test showed that the \u2018orange peel mixture\u2019 can absorb 76.1% of water, which is significantly greater than the acrylic SAP, starch SAP and pectin SAP,\u201d\u00a0Nirghin said.<\/p>\n<p>Her orange peel mixture was made\u00a0out of waste products found in the juice manufacturing industry where the\u00a0only resources involved were electricity and time.
