{"id":138585,"date":"2016-09-29T17:45:58","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T15:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=138585"},"modified":"2016-09-29T17:45:58","modified_gmt":"2016-09-29T15:45:58","slug":"universities-should-not-make-money-fees-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/138585\/universities-should-not-make-money-fees-commission\/","title":{"rendered":"Universities should not make money &#8211; fees commission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Universities should not be money-making organisations, the fees commission heard on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Universities were meant to help build a nation, not make profit, the South African Further Education and Training Student Association (Safetsa) said at the commission\u2019s public hearings in Pretoria.<\/p>\n<p>The association\u2019s president Yonke Twani, and his colleagues Thato Kgetse and Nozuko Tukela presented their submission.<\/p>\n<p>Although some countries had tried to implement free education and failed due to the state of their economies, South Africa could achieve it, with \u201cimagination and commitment,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Makerere in Kampala, Uganda, was one example where attempts to implement free education had failed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Observers argued that it failed because their economic climate was not yet ready for such drastic changes,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p>Safetsa called for government and the private sector to work together to help bring about free education.<\/p>\n<p>The association said some of those taking part in protests against university fee increases believed the tactics used during the June 1976 anti-apartheid protests should be repeated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe throwing of stones and shooting of rubber bullets, the torching of property and tear-gassing, violence and intimidation have all become common features.
