A map published by the Center for Tropical Agriculture shows where the world’s food originates from, including which products are grown close to home.<\/p>\n

The map is based off a global study looking at the origin, production and export of major produce type across the world – confirming what the researchers had long held as fact: that the world’s food system is completely global.<\/p>\n

Over the decades, as globalisation and trade opened up, foods grown in disparate parts of the world have become part of the dietary customs in very different countries, the researchers said.<\/p>\n

“For each country, we could work out which crops contributed to calories, protein, fats and total weight of food \u2014 and whether they originated in that country’s region or were foreign,” the group said.<\/p>\n

Globally, foreign crops made up 69% of country food supplies and farm production, the researchers said.<\/p>\n

In Southern Africa (including Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe), the main food produced include:<\/p>\n
