MTN<\/a> continues to invest in its mobile network, and is aiming for 99% 2G coverage by the end of 2012. The company is also planning to reach 70% 3G<\/a> (broadband) coverage by the end of the year.<\/p>\n

Kanagaratnam Lambotharan<\/a>, Chief Technology Officer at MTN SA, told MyBroadband BusinessTech that \u201cMTN is deploying 2G sites to ensure sufficient capacity and coverage with the goal of getting 99% population covered by year end\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith regards to 3G, we are aggressively rolling out coverage to both improve the in-building experience and to provide new coverage. We aim to get to 70% by end 2012 and 85% (population covered) later in 2013.\u201d<\/p>\n

MTN is currently conducting LTE<\/a> trials in Gauteng using re-farmed 1,800MHz spectrum, and initial feedback from users on the trial results are very promising.<\/p>\n

However, Lambotharan would not divulge more information about their LTE trial, saying that \u201cMTN is currently monitoring and analysing progress on the LTE pilot and therefore is not yet in a position to divulge further information\u201d.<\/p>\n
