{"id":14098,"date":"2012-05-30T15:19:37","date_gmt":"2012-05-30T13:19:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=14098"},"modified":"2012-05-30T15:38:49","modified_gmt":"2012-05-30T13:38:49","slug":"cell-c-set-to-cut-workforce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/14098\/cell-c-set-to-cut-workforce\/","title":{"rendered":"Cell C set to cut workforce"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1641-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a> is set to retrench up to 150 employees as it looks to streamline its business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can confirm that Cell C has embarked on a process of consultation in respect of possible retrenchment this week.&#8221; said Cell C spokesperson, <a title=\"Karin Fourie\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/254976-Karin-Fourie\">Karin Fourie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this time, and subject to consultation with the affected employees themselves, approximately 150 employees could be retrenched,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe objective of the restructuring process is to streamline the business, to bring the business closer to our customer base and to make it more competitive. We are focusing on the areas of the business that we believe are overstaffed,\u201d Fourie said.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C has 1,288 permanent and fixed-term employees.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C announced last week that its majority shareholder, Dubai-based <a title=\"Oger Telecom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/3055-Oger-Telecom\">Oger Telecom<\/a> is currently injecting US$180 million (about R1,5 billion) as equity into Cell C.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis foreign investment into South Africa demonstrates the confidence our shareholders have in both South Africa and Cell C,\u201d said Cell C CEO, <a title=\"Alan Knott-Craig (Senior)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1642-Alan-Knott-Craig-%28Senior%29\">Alan Knott-Craig<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Appointed as new chief of Cell C in April, Knott-Craig has been on a drive to shake up the local market.
