{"id":14201,"date":"2012-05-31T15:00:10","date_gmt":"2012-05-31T13:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=14201"},"modified":"2012-06-01T11:27:53","modified_gmt":"2012-06-01T09:27:53","slug":"lenovo-triples-sa-market-share","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/hardware\/14201\/lenovo-triples-sa-market-share\/","title":{"rendered":"Lenovo triples SA market share"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Electronics manufacturer <a title=\"Lenovo Group\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1630-Lenovo\">Lenovo<\/a> has grown worldwide at \u0093ten times the market\u0094 of the PC industry since 2009\u0082 and has mirrored this performance in SA where it has tripled its market share in three years\u0082 according to Lenovo general manager in SA\u0082 <a title=\"David Drummond\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/3178-David-Drummond\">David Drummond<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lenovo\u0092s PC business has quickly risen to become the second biggest PC producer worldwide\u0082 behind <a title=\"Hewlett-Packard (HP)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2007-Hewlett-Packard\">Hewlett-Packard (HP)<\/a>. The Chinese computer maker\u0092s market share is now 14% compared to HP\u0092s 16.5%\u0082 Drummond said.<\/p>\n<p>Following on from group\u0092s dominant market share in China and Japan\u0082 the brand was rapidly growing in Africa and other emerging markets\u0082 he said\u0082 adding that the group\u0092s focus on sustainable growth and maintaining the strong trajectory could see it become the world leader.<\/p>\n<p>In SA\u0082 the company had focused on products targeted at large businesses\u0082 banks and government institutions\u0082 and a \u0093dedicated range\u0094 targeted at small- and medium-sized organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Consumer demand for the company\u0092s PCs in SA has also grown quickly.<br \/>\n\u0093<br \/>\nA couple of years ago\u0082 you wouldn\u0092t have seen Lenovo in stores\u0082 but now they are everywhere\u0082\u0094 Drummond said\u0082 adding that 75\u0082000 units were being sold every quarter in the country.<\/p>\n<p>From its market share in SA of between 4% and 5% in 2009\u0082 the company now enjoyed a share of the industry of between 10% and 12.5%\u0082 Drummond said.<br \/>\n\u0093<br \/>\nGrowth has been spectacular in SA\u0082\u0094 he said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005\u0082 Lenovo acquired <a title=\"IBM\u0092\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1700-IBM-International-Business-Machine\">IBM\u0092s<\/a> PC division\u0082 and Drummond said that the company had retained many IBM customers\u0082 which had helped drive its strong market share.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007\u0082 Lenovo formed a PC joint venture with Japan\u0092s leading IT company\u0082 NEC. The new company was named Lenovo NEC\u0082 with Lenovo holding a 51% stake in the group.<\/p>\n<p>Drummond said that this \u0093showed the boldness of Lenovo\u0082 to go into Japan and buy their number one brand\u0094.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the humbleness of the company\u0092s beginnings and the \u0093down to earth\u0094 nature of its leaders was a main contributor to its success. \u0093Lenovo products were once delivered on the back of bicycles\u0082\u0094 he added.<\/p>\n<p>On May 23\u0082 the group reported that it had begun 2011 as the world\u0092s fourth-largest PC vendor and ended the year in second place.<\/p>\n<p>It reported record full-year sales of US$29.6 billion\u0082 and a record full-year pre-tax income of $582 million\u0082 an increase of 63% year on year.<\/p>\n<p>Yang Yuanqing\u0082 group chairman and CEO\u0082 said: \u0093We furthered our leadership position in the global emerging markets\u0082 in which Lenovo already achieved double-digit market share in 15 markets and became number one in India.<br \/>\n\u0093<br \/>\nWith the emergence of multiple devices such as smartphones\u0082 tablets and smart TV\u0082 our industry is entering the \u0092PC plus\u0092 era.
