{"id":142832,"date":"2016-11-10T09:35:16","date_gmt":"2016-11-10T07:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=142832"},"modified":"2016-11-10T09:35:16","modified_gmt":"2016-11-10T07:35:16","slug":"rarest-number-plate-in-south-africa-could-fetch-r1-million-at-auction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/142832\/rarest-number-plate-in-south-africa-could-fetch-r1-million-at-auction\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Rarest&#8217; number plate in South Africa could fetch R1 million at auction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"st\">South African appraiser and auction house<\/span> Stephan Welz &amp; Co says it will auction off some of the country&#8217;s most expensive number plates at an event in Johannesburg, later this month.<\/p>\n<p>The plates up for auction include the rarest and unique 8 single digit Gauteng number plates out of a possible 78 billion combinations of which have achieved high selling prices globally, the auction house said.<\/p>\n<p>Stephan Welz &amp; Co noted that the personalised number plate market in South Africa is still in its infancy.<\/p>\n<p>However, since 2000 as many as 500,000 personalised number plates have been sold with the Department of Transport generating in excess of R500 million in revenue.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1Plate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-142838\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1Plate.jpg\" alt=\"1plate\" width=\"600\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1Plate.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1Plate-300x84.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to Stephan Welz &amp; Co, 1 \u2013 GP to 8 \u2013 GP is available with 9 \u2013 GP already purchased by Joost van der Westhuizen (his rugby jersey number).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The price of SA\u2019s most valuable plate (1- GP) is expected to fetch well over the R1 million mark with SA\u2019s top business elite, royalty, investors and even government officials vying for one of these prize possessions,&#8221; the auction house said.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/MandelaPlate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-142834\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/MandelaPlate.jpg\" alt=\"mandelaplate\" width=\"600\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/MandelaPlate.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/MandelaPlate-300x84.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nStephan Welz &amp; Co pointed to remarkable uptick in personalised number plates going on auction globally, including a businessman from India, Balwinder Sahani, who paid R125 million (33 million dirhams) for the Dubai number plate &#8216;D5&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>In the United Kingdom, the number plate K1NGS sold for \u00a3231 000 and RR1 sold for \u00a375,000.<\/p>\n<p>On the first public auction of number plates in Dubai, the number plate &#8216;2&#8217; sold for an equivalent of R2.73 million and the number plate &#8216;6&#8217; sold for R1.78 million and &#8217;11&#8217; for R1.85 million, the auctioneer said.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/911Plate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-142836\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/911Plate.jpg\" alt=\"911plate\" width=\"600\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/911Plate.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/911Plate-300x84.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1989 in New Zealand, the single character number plate &#8216;1&#8217; sold at the first auction of its kind for $34 100 (NZ).
