{"id":14321,"date":"2012-06-01T17:21:02","date_gmt":"2012-06-01T15:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=14321"},"modified":"2012-06-04T11:37:50","modified_gmt":"2012-06-04T09:37:50","slug":"telkom-set-for-lengthy-wait-on-kt-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/14321\/telkom-set-for-lengthy-wait-on-kt-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Telkom set for lengthy wait on KT future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cabinet has asked the minister of the <a title=\"Department of Communications (DoC)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2129-DoC-Department-of-Communications\">Department of Communications<\/a>, <a title=\"Dina Pule\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2128-Dina-Pule\">Dina Pule<\/a>, to report back to it about all the options that are available for <a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1637-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a> in three months time, after government blocked the SA operator\u2019s deal with <a title=\"KT Corp\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1638-KT-Korea-Telecom-Corporation\">KT Corp<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shares in Telkom closed 8.34% lower to R21 on the <a title=\"JSE Limited\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1663-JSE-Limited\">JSE<\/a>, giving the group a market cap of just more than R10.9 billion, from a value of\u00a0R19.5 billion in June 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom advised shareholders on Friday (1 June) that the potential strategic venture with KT Corp will not go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelkom has been informed by the Honourable Minister of Communications that the proposed transaction between the companies had been presented to cabinet on 30 May 2012 and that cabinet had taken the decision not to support the transaction as proposed,\u201d the group said in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement of its own, the DoC said: \u201cIn considering the proposed deal between Telkom and South Korea\u2019s KT Corporation, cabinet took into account the fact that the Department of Communications is driving the Government policy of rolling out broadband, in partnership with the private sector, to all citizens by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelkom is a key and strategic asset in the rollout of this telecommunications infrastructure and in the effort to improve the skills of our citizens.
