{"id":143352,"date":"2016-11-16T08:10:14","date_gmt":"2016-11-16T06:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=143352"},"modified":"2016-11-16T08:10:14","modified_gmt":"2016-11-16T06:10:14","slug":"5-things-you-need-to-know-in-south-africa-today-85","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/143352\/5-things-you-need-to-know-in-south-africa-today-85\/","title":{"rendered":"5 things you need to know in South Africa today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fin24.com\/Economy\/Eskom\/gupta-linked-eskom-board-member-named-in-probe-resigns-20161116\">As tears flowed at Eskom as staff begged CEO Brian Molefe not to resign, an Eskom board member with links to the Gupta family has also called it quits.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0Mark Pamensky\u00a0&#8211; a director of a company owned by the Gupta family that has ties with President Jacob Zuma\u2019s son &#8211;\u00a0has resigned as a board member at\u00a0Eskom.\u00a0Pamensky is still the lead independent non-executive director at Oakbay Resources and Energy, but is no longer a director at Shiva Uranium, where he was involved, previously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ewn.co.za\/2016\/11\/16\/npa-head-says-giving-zuma-three-days-to-decide-on-his-suspension-is-unreasonable\">NPA head Shaun Abrahams faces suspension over the failed fraud case against finance minister Pravin Gordhan, but he has stressed that no decision has yet been made, and that the president has 14 days to apply his mind<\/a><\/strong>, and listen to his side of the story before making a decision. Abrahams said that the NPA would continue to do its job &#8211; including investigating the possible case against Gordhan relating to the so-called Rogue Spy Unit at SARS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/business\/news\/jonas-recommits-to-fiscal-consolidation-2090328\">Both finance minister, Pravin Gordhan and his deputy, Mcebisi Jonas, are talking up South Africa&#8217;s financial strength, in the face of a very real reality that the country could be junk by December<\/a><\/strong>. Ratings agencies are in South Africa this week to decide on the country&#8217;s fate &#8211; and government officials with the hands on the purse strings are doing their best to show them that we are dedicated to fiscal consolidation and cutting spending.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/thetimes\/2016\/11\/16\/Thuli-vs-Hlaudi-again\">The parliamentary committee investigating the SABC is working around the clock to get to the bottom of the problems facing the public broadcaster &#8211; and are bringing in former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to testify as a key witness<\/a><\/strong>. The committee said that investigations will continue despite the entire SABC board, except one person, resigning.
