{"id":143831,"date":"2016-11-21T08:06:21","date_gmt":"2016-11-21T06:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=143831"},"modified":"2016-11-21T10:43:23","modified_gmt":"2016-11-21T08:43:23","slug":"5-things-you-need-to-know-in-south-africa-today-88","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/143831\/5-things-you-need-to-know-in-south-africa-today-88\/","title":{"rendered":"5 things you need to know in South Africa today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/business\/news\/anger-disbelief-over-proposed-minimum-wage-2091752\">Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the level at which the country&#8217;s National Minimum Wage has been recommended is R3,500 per month or R20 per day; however, many are not happy with it.<\/a><\/strong> The EFF has slammed the wage saying that anything under R4,500 is anti-worker, while\u00a0the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) recommended a level between R3,700 and R4,500.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ewn.co.za\/2016\/11\/21\/da-calls-on-hawks-to-probe-zuma-over-comments-about-stealing-of-public-funds\">Following comments from president Jacob Zuma that he knows who is stealing money from government, the DA wants the Hawks to investigate the claims, saying that, if true, by not reporting the theft of state funds, Zuma is an accessory to the crime<\/a><\/strong>. The president was speaking to supporters, saying that it was not him who was stealing, but rather others that he knows of. He said he watched them steal the money &#8211; but to date has not done anything about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/thetimes\/2016\/11\/21\/Torrential-rain-yet-to-break-the-drought\">Despite torrential rain being experienced by Gauteng, the drought is still far from over, the South African Weather Service has said<\/a><\/strong>. The heavy rainfall &#8211; which has led to flooding in some areas around Joburg &#8211; has boosted the Vaal Dam&#8217;s water levels to around 32.5% &#8211; up from 26% just two weeks ago &#8211; but these levels are still well below the 54% seen the same time last year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/thetimes\/2016\/11\/21\/Foreign-students-drop-plans-to-study-at-UCT\">Foreign students who were going to study at South African universities in 2017 have decided to rather give the country a skip, thanks to the uncertainty and violence surrounding the FeesMustFall movement<\/a><\/strong>. Almost 100 foreign students have pulled out of a study-abroad programme over worries of disrupted and incomplete classes, and police or security violence against them.
