He said that no one – not even the PP – can order the president to set up a judicial commission, and order how it should be set up. Zuma said he could not do it anyway, because the report will be challenged.

Court action to try and force president Zuma to take action against NPA head Shaun Abrahams is set to take place today. The Helen Suzman Foundation and Freedom Under Law are going to the High Court seeking a ruling that will force Zuma to suspend Abrahams over the botched case of fraud against finance minister Pravin Gordhan. Zuma has previously stated that the case is premature, as there is already a process underway, where he has asked Abrahams to provide reasons why he should not be suspended.

The Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee will announce its interest rates decision today. This will be the last rate decision for 2016, although the MPC has indicated previously that rate changes were unlikely. However, recent inflation data came in worse than expected, while economic growth has slowed down even more.

SARS head Tom Moyane has written a letter to finance minister Pravin Gordhan clarifying the role of the new ‘Spy Unit’ being set up at SARS. The unit’s main goal is to crack down on criminal and syndicate behaviour within SARS itself, working with the SAPS. However, certain descriptions in the explanation are strikingly close to issues that landed Gordhan and his co-accused in hot water for setting up the so-called “rogue” SARS unit.

South Africa’s rand fell as much as 1.7 percent against the dollar on Wednesday, as heightened bets on a U.S. interest rate hike next month lifted the greenback against emerging market currencies. On Thursday the rand was trading at R14.21 to the dollar, R17.67 to the pound and R14.98 to the euro.

Zuma has made it clear that the Public Protector report on state capture will be challenged; civil groups will try forcing Zuma to suspend NPA head Shaun Abrahams in court today; the MPC will make its final rate decision for 2016 today; and we find out more about SARS’ new ‘spy unit’.

[9872,11121,23
26
post-144309","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","category-finance","category-government","tag-headline
["GET
