It was not announced why the meeting was extended, but it is understood to be because of a surprise tabling of a motion to recall president Jacob Zuma. Reports say that the NEC is split down the middle on whether to vote in the motion, with many NEC members staying away in order to avoid being a part of the process.

At least three ministers are fighting for the vote to fire Zuma to go ahead at the ANC’s NEC meeting – Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi have all asked Zuma to resign – strongly supported by ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu, News24 reports.

South Africa is dancing on a knife’s edge as two ratings agencies have so far given the country a break and avoided cutting it junk – but the last, and most pessimistic, agency is still to make its decision. Last week Moody’s and Fitch gave South Africa a reprieve – 6 months to show it can change things around. The former has SA two notches above junk, while the latter is one notch above junk. Both have now put the country on a negative outlook. Today is the deadline for Abrahams to convince Zuma that he did not shirk his duties as NDPP by pursuing a failed case of fraud against finance minister Pravin Gordhan, missing or ignoring vital evidence which would have dissolved the case in court.
