Economic Freedom Fighters leader, Julius Malema says that only Kgalema Motlanthe can rescue the ANC from its demise.<\/p>\n
The ruling party has admitted that it is at its weakest point, having lost significant ground to the Democratic Alliance and the EFF in the municipal elections in October.<\/p>\n
In an interview with The Huffington Post<\/a>, Malema said: “ANC is dying a slow painful death, and there is nothing they can do to rescue it. The only thing that can rescue (the ANC) is this man,” Malema said of Motlanthe.<\/p>\n Motlanthe served as president of South Africa between 25 September 2008 and 9 May 2009, following the resignation of Thabo Mbeki.<\/p>\n Motlanthe served as deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC), a position he held from 2007 until 2012, when he declined to run for a second term. At the 53rd ANC National Conference in Mangaung, Free State, Motlanthe ran for the position of president of the ANC, but was soundly defeated by Jacob Zuma, who won re-election.<\/p>\n Malema said that things began to go wrong for the party in 2012 when they rejected Motlanthe. “The ANC would have come back much stronger,” Malema said. “Kgalema is a man of integrity, Kgalema is knowledgeable.”<\/p>\n “He listens to the opposition. A man that listens to the opposition and says what you’re saying is right, is the most dangerous man to the opposition because he will render you useless, you will close shop.”<\/p>\n Malema was again critical of\u00a0 Cyril Ramaphosa’s role in the Marikana massacre. However, as the\u00a0National Executive Committee debates Zuma’s future on Monday, the largest worker federation, Cosatu, last week<\/a> threw its weight behind Ramaphosa to take over as president of the ANC.<\/p>\n
