{"id":145167,"date":"2016-11-30T19:46:24","date_gmt":"2016-11-30T17:46:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=145167"},"modified":"2016-11-30T21:05:21","modified_gmt":"2016-11-30T19:05:21","slug":"this-is-how-much-sugar-is-in-your-favourite-breakfast-cereals-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/145167\/this-is-how-much-sugar-is-in-your-favourite-breakfast-cereals-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"This is how much sugar is in your favourite breakfast cereals in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new survey conducted by World Action on Salt and Health (WASH) has revealed a &#8216;shocking&#8217; difference in levels of salt and sugar found in comparative branded breakfast cereals around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The research found that over half of cereals (58%) contained high levels of sugar (over 22.5g\/100g) \u2013 representing nearly six teaspoons of sugar per 100g.<\/p>\n<p>The survey selected 19 products manufactured by Kellogg\u2019s and Nestle\/General Mills from 29 countries for comparison.<\/p>\n<p>It found that\u00a0 55% of the cereals surveyed contained half the daily recommended intake of free sugars of a 3 year old (15g\/day) in one serving.<\/p>\n<p>Both manufacturers had cereals which contained high levels of salt and sugar, with Kellogg\u2019s cereals featuring in the top five most sugary and saltiest cereals surveyed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top 5 cereals with the highest sugar:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Cereal1-e1480518730906.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-new-size wp-image-145169\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Cereal1-640x233.png\" alt=\"cereal1\" width=\"640\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Top 5 cereals with the lowest sugar:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Cereal2-e1480518710778.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-145171\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Cereal2-e1480518710778.png\" alt=\"cereal2\" width=\"650\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The survey also revealed a variation in salt and sugar contents of the same breakfast cereal sold in different countries.<\/p>\n<p>Kellogg\u2019s Honey Smacks in Mexico (57g per 100g) had 25% more sugar than the same cereal in Belgium, Spain, Morocco, Norway, Qatar, Kuwait and UAE (43g\/100g).<\/p>\n<p>Kellogg\u2019s Cornflakes sold in India which contained the highest level of salt (1.93g\/100g) had 46% more salt than the same product in Argentina and Brazil (1.04g\/100g), WASH said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top 5 cereals brands with the highest salt content include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Cereal3-e1480518660230.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-145173\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Cereal3-e1480518660230.png\" alt=\"cereal3\" width=\"650\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WASH called for all food manufacturers to universally reduce the salt and sugar content of their products to help achieve the global WHO maximum target of 5g salt per adult per day and 25g free sugars per day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top 5 cereals with the lowest salt content were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Cereal4-e1480518644492.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-145175\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Cereal4-e1480518644492.png\" alt=\"cereal4\" width=\"650\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor Graham MacGregor, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Queen Mary University of London and Chairman of WASH said: \u201cIt is shocking that breakfast cereals still contain extremely high levels of salt and sugar.
