{"id":145207,"date":"2016-11-30T19:47:52","date_gmt":"2016-11-30T17:47:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=145207"},"modified":"2016-11-30T19:47:52","modified_gmt":"2016-11-30T17:47:52","slug":"google-reveals-what-your-neighbourhood-looked-like-in-1984","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/145207\/google-reveals-what-your-neighbourhood-looked-like-in-1984\/","title":{"rendered":"Google reveals what your neighbourhood looked like in 1984"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/earth\/our-most-detailed-view-earth-across-space-and-time\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Google has released<\/strong><\/a> its \u201cmost detailed view of Earth across space and time\u201d as part of the latest update to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/earthengine.google.com\/timelapse\/#\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Google Earth Timelapse<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Google released Earth Timelapse in 2013, allowing users to explore changes to our planet \u201clike never before\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The company has now released the\u00a0largest update to Timelapse yet, with \u201cfour additional years of imagery, petabytes of new data, and a sharper view of the Earth from 1984 to 2016\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Timelapse map, embedded below, allows users to zoom in on an area \u2013 down to a suburb level \u2013 and see how the landscape has changed between 1984 and 2016.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">How it works<\/h3>\n<p>The service uses the\u00a0Google Earth Engine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is made from 33 cloud-free annual mosaics, one for each year from 1984 to 2016, which are made interactively explorable by Carnegie Mellon University CREATE Lab\u2019s Time Machine library,\u201d said Google.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing Earth Engine, we combined over 5 million satellite images acquired over the past three decades by five different satellites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To use the engine below, hover your cursor over it. You can zoom to an area of your choosing and play a timelapse of its satellite images.
