{"id":145469,"date":"2016-12-02T11:56:56","date_gmt":"2016-12-02T09:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=145469"},"modified":"2016-12-02T13:17:15","modified_gmt":"2016-12-02T11:17:15","slug":"this-is-how-many-people-are-listening-to-south-africas-most-popular-radio-stations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/145469\/this-is-how-many-people-are-listening-to-south-africas-most-popular-radio-stations\/","title":{"rendered":"This is how many people are listening to South Africa&#8217;s most popular radio stations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New data released by the Broadcast Research Council in South Africa (BRC) shows which radio stations in the country are the most popular among listeners in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In its <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brcsa.org.za\/brc-ram-radio-listening-jan-sep-2016\/\">January to September review<\/a><\/strong>, the BRC published the estimated listenerships of 39 commercial radio stations and 233 community stations across the country, using a\u00a0sample of 53,396 listeners.<\/p>\n<p>The BRC estimates that there are approximately 38.3 million radio listeners in South Africa,\u00a0 making it\u00a0the most consumed form of media in the country, with most listeners (60%) living in urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the listenership is split evenly (20% each) across small urban and rural areas, the BRC said.<\/p>\n<p>The group&#8217;s data shows that on any given week, there are 35 million people listening to radio stations in South Africa, with approximately 28.6 million tuning in every day.<\/p>\n<p>This penetration and pervasiveness of radio broadcast is across the country, with even the lowest tune-in rate (Northern Cape) still being at 80%.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Whos-tuning-in.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-new-size wp-image-145473\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Whos-tuning-in-640x367.png\" alt=\"whos-tuning-in\" width=\"640\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Whos-tuning-in-640x367.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Whos-tuning-in-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Whos-tuning-in.png 712w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other interesting facts to come from the data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>South Africans listen to the radio for 4 hours and 6 minutes a day, on average. The Free State has the longest tune-in time of 5 hours, while Gauteng listens for the shortest time at 3 and a half hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Sesotho and Swati listeners tune-in the longest at 4 hours and 36 minutes. English listeners tune-in for the shortest time at 3 hours 12 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>More than half of listeners (52%) are considered &#8216;heavy listeners&#8217; &#8211; tuning in for more than 20 hours a week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>64% of listeners only listen to one station.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Portable radios are still the most widely-used device for listing to radio stations (76%) &#8211; followed by cellphones (37%), car radios (26%), desktop computers (8%) and laptops (2%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>These are the biggest radio stations in South
