{"id":14701,"date":"2012-06-07T08:26:39","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T06:26:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=14701"},"modified":"2012-06-07T08:28:11","modified_gmt":"2012-06-07T06:28:11","slug":"twitter-mobile-ad-revenue-tops-web-often","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/14701\/twitter-mobile-ad-revenue-tops-web-often\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter mobile ad revenue tops web often"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Twitter\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/359584-Twitter\">Twitter<\/a> has generated more advertising revenue from its mobile platform than from its website on many days in the last quarter, CEO <a title=\"Dick Costolo\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2020-Dick-Costolo\">Dick Costolo<\/a> said Wednesday, highlighting Twitter&#8217;s progress in squeezing ad dollars out of the growing number of smartphone and tablet users worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a conference hosted by The Economist Group in San Francisco, Costolo made his remarks at a time when newly public Facebook, a competitor in the social Internet arena, faces intense pressure to improve its business performance on mobile.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Facebook\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1710-Facebook\">Facebook&#8217;s<\/a> stock has been battered since its troubled IPO in May, an event overshadowed by concerns that the social network &#8212; first built in 2004 by CEO <a title=\"Mark Zuckerberg\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2451-Mark-Zuckerberg\">Mark Zuckerberg<\/a> as a desktop Website &#8212; would continue its struggle to monetize mobile users.<\/p>\n<p>But Twitter, which is viewed in Silicon Valley as the most significant IPO prospect following Facebook, has taken pains to publicly distance itself from Facebook&#8217;s struggles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re borne of mobile,&#8221; Costolo said in response to a moderator&#8217;s question about the difference between Facebook and Twitter. &#8220;We have an ad platform that already is inherently suited to mobile, even though we launched our platform on the Web and only started running ads on mobile recently.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Twitter, which now has 140 million monthly active users producing 400 million tweets daily, has ramped up its revenue-generating efforts since Costolo assumed the top leadership role in late 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The company introduced ads into smartphone users&#8217; timeline in February.
