Employment data released by Statistics South Africa for the third quarter of 2016, showed that employment increased by 93,000 quarter-on-quarter.<\/p>\n
Community and Social Services Industry proved to be the biggest growth area with 78,000 new jobs created. This is as a result of the municipal elections which created thousands of news jobs for temporary staff.<\/p>\n
The Mining Industry was the biggest disappointment of the quarter, contributing just 2,000 jobs. Elsewhere, Manufacturing continues to “bleed” jobs with 3,000 cut over the last year.<\/p>\n
“The increase in jobs in the quarter is due to the extra budgetary increase in elections and higher education,” said statistician general, Dr Pali Lehohla at the Statistics South Africa offices in Pretoria. “The increase in jobs in the quarter is due to the extra budgetary increase in elections and higher education.”<\/p>\n
StatsSA recorded an annual increase of R34 billion or 6.7% in earnings to employees, while the gross earnings for the quarter were R20 billion or 3.9% with the Finance Industry responsible for the majority of earnings.<\/p>\n
Average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, for all industries in the formal non-agricultural sector of the economy\u00a0 increased by 0.1% from R18,077 in May 2016 to R18,104 in August 2016.<\/p>\n
