Democratic Alliance head Mmusi Maimane<\/a><\/strong> says that it is “unjustifiable” and wrong for employers to get their domestic workers to walk their dogs.<\/p>\n

“Went for a run this am. It’s astounding how many domestic workers are walking their employers dogs. It’s in my view, wrong and unjustifiable,”<\/em> Maimane said on social media site, Twitter, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The DA lead’s comment immediately sparked debate on the social media platform as users either agreed with him, or pointed out potential flaws in his statement.<\/p>\n

More than one million domestic workers are employed in South Africa – often without contract, which can lead to exploitation<\/a>, particularly when it comes to pay and hours worked.<\/p>\n

In order to help address the latter issue, deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa noted last month, that a panel of advisors on the national minimum wage had settled on a proposed figure of R3,500 per month.<\/p>\n

That amounts to approximately R20 per hour.<\/p>\n
