Telkom<\/a> released its annual results for the year ended 31 March 2012 today (8 June 2012), showing a continued decline in fixed line subscribers.<\/p>\n

According to Telkom\u2019s latest figures the company now has 3,995,000 fixed lines, down from 4,073,000 in September 2011. This is the lowest number of subscribers since 1996.<\/p>\n

Since the year 2000 there has been a steady decline in fixed-line numbers despite an economic boom from 2003 to 2007 and the launch of ADSL<\/a> in late 2002.<\/p>\n

What should be of particular concern to Telkom is that every segment of its fixed line business declined, as shown in the table below.<\/p>\n

Telkom\u2019s steady decline in fixed line numbers since the turn of the century has been blamed on many factors including competition from mobile services, copper theft and tough economic conditions.<\/p>\n
