{"id":148611,"date":"2017-01-03T14:03:24","date_gmt":"2017-01-03T12:03:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=148611"},"modified":"2017-01-03T14:03:24","modified_gmt":"2017-01-03T12:03:24","slug":"gauteng-mec-defends-matric-subject-adjustments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/148611\/gauteng-mec-defends-matric-subject-adjustments\/","title":{"rendered":"Gauteng MEC defends matric subject adjustments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Democratic Alliance (DA)\u2019s Shadow Minister for Education Gavin Davis recently wrote an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/148481\/half-of-2016s-matric-subjects-will-have-their-marks-adjusted-upwards\/\" target=\"_blank\">open letter<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to Umalusi questioning why marks have been adjusted for 32 subjects compared to 29 in the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, Davis disclosed information about the matric 2016 mark adjustments which was revealed during a\u00a0recent \u201cstandardisation meeting\u201d with Umalusi and the department which he attended.<\/p>\n<p>Upward mark adjustments normally take place when \u201cthe exam paper was demonstrably more difficult than previous years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Davis said no evidence was put forward to \u201cdemonstrate that these papers were of a higher standard\u201d and that\u00a0the starting point for adjusting the marks was not the papers, but the results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the subjects saw a dramatic upwards adjustment,\u201d said Davis, including\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/government\/192662-matric-2016-maths-marks-adjusted-upwards-da.html\" target=\"_blank\">maths and maths literacy.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has spoken out against Davis and defended the process, saying the correct processes were followed\u00a0reports <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ewn.co.za\/2017\/01\/03\/questions-raised-about-quality-of-umalusi-methodology-on-adjusting-marks\" target=\"_blank\">EWN<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Davis lacks understanding and needs to receive a basic course from the notion of standardisation and education&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the rationale for it is very important because it allows us to balance the gaps and it also allows us to manage the quality of education and Umalusi is an independent body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will announce the national pass rate for the matric class of 2016 on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/148481\/half-of-2016s-matric-subjects-will-have-their-marks-adjusted-upwards\/\" target=\"_blank\">Half of 2016\u2019s matric subjects will have their marks adjusted upwards<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has defended Umalusi&#8217;s decison to adjust 28 of the 58 National Senior Certificate subjects written by the matric class of 2016 upwards.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":108219,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[25],"class_list":["post-148611","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-trending","tag-active"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/148611","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=148611"}],"version-history":[{"count":10,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/148611\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":148631,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/148611\/revisions\/148631"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/108219"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=148611"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=148611"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=148611"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
