{"id":148725,"date":"2017-01-04T12:09:55","date_gmt":"2017-01-04T10:09:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=148725"},"modified":"2017-01-04T12:09:55","modified_gmt":"2017-01-04T10:09:55","slug":"serious-concerns-raised-about-the-quality-of-2016s-matric-passes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/148725\/serious-concerns-raised-about-the-quality-of-2016s-matric-passes\/","title":{"rendered":"Serious concerns raised about the quality of 2016&#8217;s matric passes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Naptosa (The National Professional Teachers Organisation of South Africa)\u00a0executive director Basil Manuel has raised concerns as to the quality of passes of 2016&#8217;s matriculants,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/local\/2017\/01\/04\/Educators-fret-about-%E2%80%98worrisome-decline%E2%80%99-in-matric-Maths-marks\" target=\"_blank\">Times Live<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>reports.<\/p>\n<p>While Naptosa expects a slight increase in the percentage of matrics who passed in 2016\u201a up from 70.7% in 2015, &#8220;a large increase would be suspicious,&#8221; said Manuel.\u00a0\u201cWe predict a slight increase in pass mark results\u201a but Naptosa still believes the quality of passes is what really matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This follows\u00a0the announcement by regulatory-body Umalusi stating that 2016&#8217;s Maths and Maths Literacy results are &#8220;very poor&#8221; even by previous year&#8217;s standards. \u00a0The matter needs to be investigated &#8211;\u00a0were\u00a070% of those who wrote the Maths Literacy exam had passed\u201a but that had dropped to 35%.,&#8221; said Manuel.<\/p>\n<p>Education professor Elizabeth Walton\u201a of the University of the Witwatersrand agreed with Manuel, saying: \u201cTo just talk about the pass rate\u201a I don&#8217;t think we&#8217;re learning an awful lot about the system reporting [results] at that level. It doesn&#8217;t really tell us how we could be improving the system. Far more useful questions [to ask] are about subjects in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However Walton pointed to longstanding issues with the maths subjects stemming back to apartheid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere aren&#8217;t any quick fixes. We need incremental improvement in the lower grades year to year\u201a\u201d said Walton. \u201cWe need interventions in the foundation and intermediate phases of school [primary school]. We can&#8217;t pick up problems in Grade 9\u201a start interventions then and expect to see results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This message was echoed by NGO Equal Education in a statement on Wednesday\u00a0cautioning that the\u00a0pass rate reflects only the performance of those learners who managed to stay in school for 12 years, and obscures how many dropped out along the way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Increases and decreases in the annual matric pass rate may be influenced by changes in various factors.
