The department of education has released the overall matric pass rate figures for the class of 2016, announcing that the country’s overall pass was 72.5% – 1.8 points higher than\u00a02015.<\/p>\n

The department noted that the pass rate with progressed learners excluded (learners who failed a year twice in a row and were pushed through) was at 76.2%.<\/p>\n

Looking at the provincial performances, the Free State took over from the Western Cape as the country’s leading province with a pass rate of\u00a088.2%\u201a up from 81.6% in 2015.<\/p>\n

The Western Cape placed second with 85.9%, up from 84.7% in 2015, followed by Gauteng\u00a0with 85.1%\u201a and the\u00a0North West at\u00a082.5%.<\/p>\n

This is how the provinces performed:<\/p>\n

  2. Western Cape:<\/strong> 85.9%\u00a0(2015: 84.7%)<\/li>\n
  3. Gauteng:<\/strong> 85.1 (2015: 84.2%)<\/li>\n
  4. North West<\/strong>: 82.5% (2015:81.5%)<\/li>\n
  5. Northern Cape:<\/strong> 78.7% (2015: 69.4%)<\/li>\n
  6. Mpumalanga:<\/strong> 77.1%\u00a0(2015: 78.6%)<\/li>\n
  7. KwaZulu-Natal:<\/strong> 66.4%\u00a0(2015: 60.7%)<\/li>\n
  8. Limpopo:<\/strong> 62.5%\u00a0(2015: 65.9%)<\/li>\n
  9. Eastern Cape:<\/strong> 59.3%\u00a0(2015: 56.8%)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
