61 South Africans will be making their way to\u00a0the World Economic Forum\u2019s annual meeting being held in Davos next week, including 6\u00a0government officials.<\/p>\n

2017 marks the first time in four years that the South African government has scaled down its number of attendees to the global conference.<\/p>\n

In 2016, 54 delegates from South Africa attended, including eight government officials. In 2015 the figure was 51\u00a0delegates, with 8\u00a0government officials, and in 2014 there were 40 delegates including 10 government officials.<\/p>\n

Next week, 3,000 people will converge on a small town of Davos in Switzerland to discuss the theme of the year:\u00a0\u201cResponsive and responsible leadership\u201d.<\/p>\n

The conference will have government and business leaders looking at how\u00a0they can be responsive to the global frustrations felt by those left out of the global market – while also addressing issues in a fair, sustainable way.<\/p>\n

The list of Davos attendees often bears scrutiny, particularly in terms of public representatives attending, as the costs involved are reportedly staggeringly high, costing between $20,000 and $50,000 per delegate.<\/p>\n

At current exchange rates, it could cost between R270,000 and R680,000 to send a single delegate to the event, and with six\u00a0government officials, that bill could stretch as high as R4 million.<\/p>\n
