{"id":150549,"date":"2017-01-15T05:13:14","date_gmt":"2017-01-15T03:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=150549"},"modified":"2017-01-15T05:11:10","modified_gmt":"2017-01-15T03:11:10","slug":"mbete-joins-the-race-for-anc-presidency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/150549\/mbete-joins-the-race-for-anc-presidency\/","title":{"rendered":"Mbete joins the race for ANC presidency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete has thrown her name into the ring in the race for leadership of the ANC this year, the Sunday Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview with the Sunday Times this week, Mbete said that she had been approached by many within the party to run, and &#8220;after much agonising&#8221; decided to make herself available for the role.<\/p>\n<p>This would make Mbete the third candidate to be in &#8216;official&#8217; running, with the other two candidates being deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa and outgoing AU chair, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.<\/p>\n<p>The latter two candidates have been endorsed on some official level, with Dlamini-Zuma getting support from the ANC Women&#8217;s League, and Ramaphosa from worker union Cosatu, which still holds sway despite having no direct ANC integration.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Sunday Times, Mbete&#8217;s supporters have released a slate with her in the top position, with\u00a0Mpumalanga premier David Mabuza as her deputy and NCOP chairwoman Thandi Modise as chairwoman.<\/p>\n<p>Other politicians named on the slate include\u00a0Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa as secretary-general and former ANC Youth League activist Febe Potgieter-Gqubule as deputy secretary-general, the paper reported.<\/p>\n<p>This is the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/150455\/these-could-be-the-next-leaders-of-the-anc-report\/\">fourth slate<\/a><\/strong> to make its way into the public, following those from Dlamini-Zuma supporters, Ramaphosa supporters and apparently the &#8216;surprise&#8217; slate from the ANC Youth League.<\/p>\n<p>ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa this week dismissed the slates, saying they were not official and were coming from various leagues and factions in the party.<\/p>\n<p>The party itself has spoken out on a number occasions against so-called \u2018slate politics\u2019, saying that it was divisive and against the party\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary general Gwede Mantashe has criticised the ANC Women\u2019s League and Cosatu for having endorsed candidates, saying that such talk was premature and fueled divisions at a time the party was calling for unity.<\/p>\n<p><em>You can read the full report in the Sunday Times for 15 January 2017.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:\u00a0<a title=\"These could be the next leaders of the ANC\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/150455\/these-could-be-the-next-leaders-of-the-anc-report\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">These could be the next leaders of the ANC<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete has thrown her name into the ring in the race for leadership of the ANC this year, the Sunday Times reported.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":93713,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-150549","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-government","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/150549","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=150549"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/150549\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":150551,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/150549\/revisions\/150551"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/93713"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=150549"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=150549"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=150549"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
