{"id":150998,"date":"2017-01-17T19:00:49","date_gmt":"2017-01-17T17:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=150998"},"modified":"2017-01-17T19:31:51","modified_gmt":"2017-01-17T17:31:51","slug":"6-things-you-need-to-know-about-south-africas-new-tax-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/150998\/6-things-you-need-to-know-about-south-africas-new-tax-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"6 things you need to know about South Africa&#8217;s new tax laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Zuma has\u00a0signed off on three new Tax Amendment Acts introducing several big new changes for South African taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Taxation Laws Amendment Bill<\/em>; the <em>Tax Administration Laws Amendment Bill<\/em>; and the <em>Rates and Monetary Amounts and Amendment of Revenue Laws Bill<\/em> were primarily introduced to amend major issues with current South African tax law as well as provide new incentives to current taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>The six biggest changes are detailed below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Money-e1480063254840.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-144519 size-new-size\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Money-640x402.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"402\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Expect to pay more on Capital Gains Tax<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As defined by the SARS handbook, Capital gains refers to any proceeds received after the\u00a0 disposal of an asset on or after\u00a01 October 2001.<\/p>\n<p>This includes any proceeds received after the sale of an asset, donation of an asset, death, cessation of residence, and the loss or destruction of an asset.<\/p>\n<p>This will continue to form part of the current Income Tax which, as a result, could see a slight rise. The Act dismisses this, stating that\u00a0certain tax\u00a0thresholds are set at a specific level for administrative reasons and do not require regular adjustments.<\/p>\n<p>This has come under scrutiny by analysts, who consider not adjusting these values to be &#8220;increasing taxation through stealth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/World-money.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31806 size-full\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Disclose your overseas assets<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <em>Rates and Monetary Amounts and Amendment of Revenue Laws Amendment Act <\/em>has provided a six month &#8220;grace period&#8221; to allow South African citizens to disclose previously undisclosed overseas assets.<\/p>\n<p>This special voluntary disclosure programme will run from\u00a01 October 2016 to 31 March 2017 with a waiver of all penalties (including criminal charges), provided the application is successful.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/South-Africa-piggy-bank-money.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"my-4\"><strong>Tax deductions for businesses<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>New amendments to the <em>Taxation Laws Amendment Bill<\/em>, introduced changes on tax deductions available to businesses.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to a person without disability, the value of the deduction is increased from R30,000 to R40,000 for qualifications from NQF (National Qualifications Framework) level 1 to NQF level 6 and decreased from R30,000 to R20,000 for qualifications from NQF level 7 to NQF level 10.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to person with disability, the value of the deduction is increased from R500,000 to R600,000 for qualifications from NQF level 1 to NQF level 6 and remains at R50,000 for qualifications from NQF level 7 to NQF level 10.<\/p>\n<p>A cap of R20 million was also introduced on the\u00a0claim allowed to each employer.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" allow governments to obtain detailed account information from their financial institutions and exchange that information automatically with other jurisdictions on an annual basis from September Amendment of Revenue Laws Amendment Act<\/em> has introduced a new tyre levy\u00a0at a rate of R2.30\/kg of tyre.<\/p>\n<p>This new tax replaces current agreements between tyre distributors and manufacturers meaning tyre prices are expected to rise slightly so that the new mandatory tax doesn&#8217;t cut into profits.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Now read:\u00a0<a
