{"id":153337,"date":"2017-01-27T14:43:30","date_gmt":"2017-01-27T12:43:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=153337"},"modified":"2017-01-27T14:43:30","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T12:43:30","slug":"new-items-added-to-south-africas-inflation-basket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/153337\/new-items-added-to-south-africas-inflation-basket\/","title":{"rendered":"New items added to South Africa&#8217;s inflation basket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Statistics South Africa <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?p=9450\" target=\"_blank\">has\u00a0announced<\/a><\/strong> changes to the way it calculates the country\u2019s consumer price index (CPI).<\/p>\n<p>The new basket used to calculate inflation contains 412\u00a0products and services, up from 396.<\/p>\n<p>Using data from the Living Conditions Survey\u00a0and\u00a0other sources, Stats SA said it identifies products and services that households spend the most money on and these form the basket of goods.<\/p>\n<p>This basket is updated every four years to remain relevant, which Stats SA said keeps\u00a0within the five-year norm of international best practice.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Gone:\u00a0CDs, DVDs, and teapots<\/h3>\n<p>Products removed from the basket included blank DVDs and CDs,\u00a0DVDs with content on them, and postage stamps.<\/p>\n<p>Tennis balls, teapots, electric fans, automated pool cleaners, cream style sweet corn, tinned peas, spreads such as Marmite and Bovril, theatre fees in public hospitals, and board games were also removed.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">New: Frozen pizza, levies, and games<\/h3>\n<p>A number of convenience foods entered the basket, such as frozen food\u00a0products, instant noodles, and ready-mix flour.
