The spending spree was revealed by the City Press. The DA says that Myeni, who should not even be in the position she is in, was going on spending sprees at a time when National Treasury has limited spending on such trips.

Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has continued to speak out against her successor Busisiwe Mkhwebane, claiming that all staff who worked with her on the state capture investigation are now being targeted for expulsion. Mkhwebane has drawn criticism from the public for being too friendly towards the presidency, with weekend reports quoting her as agreeing with president Jacob Zuma over the state capture matter.

South Africa’s Reserve Bank is opposing the so-called ‘Gupta Bank’, having reportedly made recommendations that the bid by Gupta associates to acquire Habib Overseas Bank unit be blocked. According to Bloomberg, the recommendation is not yet public, but the call to reject the bank is on the basis of concerns being raised about the income and tax declarations of the two Gupta associates leading the deal.

Former AU chair Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is warming up her bid for the presidency of the ANC, speaking at a ‘marathon’ church service at the weekend, calling for more female presidents in Africa. While not formally acknowledging the acceptance of a nomination – as the succession battle has not officially launched – it is widely known the Dlamini-Zuma has been primed by president Jacob Zuma and his supporters for the position. She will likely be going head to head with deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, who has employed similar tactics.

South Africa’s rand gained more than one percent to just short of a two-month peak on Friday after a jobs report from the United States showed wages there remain subdued, dimming the chances of an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve.
