Background screening company, Managed Integrity Evaluation (MIE), says that as many as one in 10 job candidates has a criminal record, with some industries attracting far more candidates with criminal histories than others – including state owned enterprises.<\/p>\n

MIE\u2019s data is pulled from its vetting services conducted over the past year \u2013 and published in an annual background screening report.<\/p>\n

The company conducted a total of 561,346 qualification checks in 2016 \u2013 up 17% from 2015.<\/p>\n

In terms of criminal record checks, director and CEO of MIE, Ina van der Merwe said that the company completed 741,560 checks \u2013 of which, 10% of candidates had a criminal record.<\/p>\n

However, perhaps even more concerning is that out of the 10% of candidates with a criminal record \u2013 48,167 candidates did not disclose their criminal history on application.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also noted that the manufacturing and mining industries are at greater risk, as these sectors recorded the highest number of candidates with criminal histories \u2013 ranging between 18% and 20%,\u201d van der Merwe said.<\/p>\n

MIE’s data also identified the types of crimes committed by candidates, with a high number guilty of violent crimes.<\/p>\n
