Vodacom<\/a> announced on 14 June 2012 that the company\u2019s chief operating officer and Managing Director of Vodacom SA, Sipho Maseko<\/a> has decided to leave the company with immediate effect.<\/p>\n

This announcement came less than ten months after Maseko joined Vodacom from BP Southern Africa, where he had been the chief executive officer since 2008. Maseko also stepped down as a member of the Vodacom Group board.<\/p>\n

What surprised many people was how sudden the announcement was. The \u2018immediate effect\u2019 resignation sparked rumours that Maseko was asked to depart because of performance issues, but Vodacom chief officer of corporate affairs, Maya Makanjee<\/a> rubbished these rumours.<\/p>\n

Makanjee said that the board was actually surprised by Maseko\u2019s sudden resignation, and that they unsuccessfully tried to convince Maseko to stay on for longer or to serve out his contract term.<\/p>\n

Makanjee reiterated that Maseko had to depart with \u2018immediate effect\u2019 to pursue other interests. However, the she could not say what made the \u2018other interest\u2019 so pressing that Maseko could not stay on for a while longer to assist with the transition.<\/p>\n

It is understood that the Vodacom board will now assess the gap left by Maseko, and will then decide whether to fill his position or to restructure the Vodacom management team to absorb Maseko\u2019s tasks.<\/p>\n

Maseko\u2019s responsibilities will be handled by Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys<\/a> until a decision is made on the way forward.<\/p>\n
