{"id":156159,"date":"2017-02-08T15:49:42","date_gmt":"2017-02-08T13:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=156159"},"modified":"2017-02-08T15:52:50","modified_gmt":"2017-02-08T13:52:50","slug":"its-official-national-minimum-wage-set-at-r3500-per-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/156159\/its-official-national-minimum-wage-set-at-r3500-per-month\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s official: national minimum wage set at R3,500 per month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the details of the South African National Minimum Wage, which will be set at R20 per hour.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ramaphosa, the minimum wage &#8211; which translates to R3,500 per month for workers on a 40 hour week and R3,900 per month for a 45 hour week &#8211; will take effect from May 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy president stressed that the current base is not a &#8220;living wage&#8221;, though it was a start to uplifting the 6.6 million workers in the country who earn below R3,500 a month, while also hopefully mitigating job losses.<\/p>\n<p>This includes workers from industries such as agriculture, where over half a million workers earn less than R20 an hour &#8211; and particularly among domestic workers, where just under a million workers earn under that amount.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/National-Minimum-wage.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-new-size wp-image-156181\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/National-Minimum-wage-640x742.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/National-Minimum-wage-640x742.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/National-Minimum-wage-259x300.png 259w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/National-Minimum-wage-768x890.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/National-Minimum-wage-884x1024.png 884w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/National-Minimum-wage.png 1034w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He said that the wage will be adjusted on an annual basis, and will be handled by a national minimum wage commission. Any\u00a0&#8216;fragile sectors&#8217; that will have difficulty complying with national minimum wage will get assistance, the deputy president assured.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe we&#8217;ve set a firm foundation towards realisation of living wage principle adopted by all at Nedlac,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Ramaphosa said that worker federation Cosatu was &#8220;on board&#8221; with the wage, despite media reports stating its opposition.
