The DA-led government in the City of Tshwane has discovered that millions of rands in revenue have been lost through fraudulent traffic fine “dumping” at the city’s traffic department, and is taking action against over 100 officials implicated in the scheme.<\/p>\n
Addressing the media on Monday, Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga said that the\u00a0City of Tshwane was unable to recover monies owed to it from a multitude of traffic violations because corrupt officials were committing fraud.<\/p>\n
The act of “dumping” fines involves changing ownership of vehicles to another party – usually another individual or corporate entity – taking all owed fines along with it to the new owner.<\/p>\n
The car’s registration is then transferred back, effectively “dumping” the fines on someone else. When the person who is unfortunate enough to be left with the dumped fines lodges a query, the fines are then wiped from the system.<\/p>\n
According to Msimanga, officials were being paid off by people who owed these fines to sort this out for them.<\/p>\n
In total, 105 officials have been linked to the scam which is believed to have been running for several years.<\/p>\n
“Instructions have been given for City of Tshwane officials implicated in this collusion to be suspended and dealt with swiftly – and in so doing we will root out this corruption from out traffic apparatus swiftly,” he said.<\/p>\n
